The Two Strategies

There are two honest ways to handle gutters under trees. Strategy one: clean them on schedule, twice a year, forever. Strategy two: install guards once, then drop to a quick check every couple of years. Both work. The right one depends on your trees, your gutters, your budget, and how much you hate thinking about gutters.

The Case for Cleaning (and Maintenance Plans)

Cleaning wins when: your tree cover is light to moderate, your gutters are older and may need replacing in a few years anyway (guards on dying gutters are wasted money), you prefer smaller recurring costs over one bigger investment, or you like having eyes on your gutters twice a year — the inspection that comes with every cleaning catches problems guards would hide. Our maintenance plan is this strategy at its best: scheduled, automatic, and cheaper per visit than one-offs.

The Case for Guards

Guards win when: your tree cover is heavy and you are paying for two or three cleanings a year, your gutters are in good shape (guards belong on sound gutters), you are tired of scheduling and just want the problem mostly gone, or you are installing new gutters anyway — guards on new gutters fit perfectly and the combined job costs less than doing them separately. Under Bethesda's heaviest canopy, guards typically pay for themselves in a few years of skipped cleanings.

What Guards Do Not Do

No guard is zero-maintenance. Fine pollen film and shingle grit build up on any guard surface over the years, and guards need an occasional rinse or brush-off. Guards also do not fix bad gutters — installing them on sagging, rusted, or poorly pitched gutters locks the problems inside. And in a truly violent storm, wind-driven rain can overshoot any gutter, guarded or not. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling.

The Math, Plainly

Add up what you spend on cleanings per year. Multiply by five years. If that number is comfortably more than a guard installation — and your gutters are sound — guards are probably the better money. If you spend modestly on one or two cleanings a year under light trees, cleaning wins. We will do this math with you during the free estimate, with your actual trees and your actual gutters. No pressure either way — we make money on both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you make more money selling guards? Are you biased?

Guards are a bigger single ticket, cleaning plans are steadier long-term — we do well on both. Our actual incentive is keeping you as a customer for years, which means recommending what fits.

Can I do both — guards plus occasional cleaning?

That is exactly what we recommend for guarded homes: a quick check every year or two. It is cheap insurance that the system keeps working.

My gutters are old. Should I still consider guards?

Probably not yet. Get the gutters' condition assessed first — guards on failing gutters are wasted money. Fix or replace the gutters, then guard the new ones.
